Hanley Leadership Recognition
The Daniel Hanley Center for Health Leadership will recognize nine Maine-based organizations and individuals who have provided outstanding voluntary medical and humanitarian relief at a special statewide dinner this Tuesday, November 30 in Portland.
The Hanley Center’s 2010 Honors For Medical and Humanitarian Service will recognize not only extraordinary service, but also exceptional leadership, collaboration and impact. The Center’s 2010 honorees include a wide range of Maine caregivers and organizations that have provided critically important healthcare services over the course of many years to people around the globe who suffer from poverty, illness and the aftermath of natural and man-disasters.
Many of the honorees have devoted enormous time and resources providing patient care under especially dangerous and challenging conditions in Haiti following the devastating earthquake that occurred in January. Several honorees have been directly involved in the response to this month’s cholera outbreak in Haiti.

The Honors will be presented before an audience of 350 at the Holiday Inn by the Sea in downtown Portland on Tuesday, November 30, 2010. The dinner begins with a reception at 5 p.m. following by the dinner and recognition ceremony beginning at 6:30 p.m.
The keynote speaker for the event is T.R. Reid, the former Washington Post foreign correspondent and NPR commentator whose 2009 book entitled, “The Healing of America: A Global Quest For Better, Cheaper and Fairer Health Care” describes how health care is provided and paid for in industrialized democracies that are most like the United States. The dinner is co-hosted by Quality Counts and the World Affairs
Council of Maine.
The Hanley Center is an independent statewide nonprofit dedicated to building a culture of greater collaboration among healthcare leaders and their organizations across Maine. Since its founding in 2002, the Center has presented its Hanley Leadership Award to six individual leaders and a Maine-based organization for their achievements improving care in Maine and nationally. This is the first year the Hanley Center has recognized leadership performed by Maine caregivers outside the United States.
Background
The Hanley Leadership Award is one of Maine’s most prestigious honors. Each year, the Award recognizes a healthcare professional, organization, team or initiative that embodies Dr. Dan Hanley’s values.
Since the Award’s inception in 2003, honorees have included Stephen Shannon, D.O, M.P.H., at the time of the award, Dean of the University of New England College of Medicine (2003); nationally known medical researcher John Wennberg, M.D., M.P.H., Chair of the Center for the Evaluative Clinical Services at Dartmouth Medical School (2004); and highly regarded Franklin County clinicians Sandra Record, R.N. and Burgess Record, M.D. (2005) and diabetes treatment pioneer Ann Gahagan, F.N.P. of Caribou (2006); Robert Ritchie, M.D., the father of Maine’s biotech industry (2007). In 2008 the, Maine Health Management Coalition was honored.
